REMAINS OF THE LIVING
2024
MOVING IMAGE
One line: In a future where nature has been almost entirely erased, a woman discovers a tunnel that links her to the green world of her childhood, but crossing it causes rapid aging. Desperate to return, she must decide how much of her life she’s willing to lose for a glimpse of what once was.
The film is a response to the devastation of the Kuthiran Hills, part of the Western Ghats in Kerala, by the construction of the state’s only road tunnel. Since 16 years the National Highway project started to displace homes and nature at large. My family relocated to the foothills of Kuthiran closer to its thinning forestry and shards of rocks left by the tunnel construction. My old home, lost to the NH 47 expansion, lies at the other end of the tunnel. In a way, this film is my own journey to all that is lost but found in memory.
The young woman is played by my sister, Diya Moncy and her older self by Mary Paul, my grandmother.
